Bunda Cliffs

Viewing the Bunda Cliffs is one of the essential Australian experiences, similar to viewing Uluru.

I was reflecting, as I traveled along the Eyre highway parallel to the cliffs, that officialdom seems to be trying to make it as difficult as possible to do so.  Fair enough in some respects. It's a dangerous place. One false move could be fatal.

But… in 100kms of cliffs there are only 3 "official" lookout points. 4 if you count the whale viewing platforms at Head of Bight.  The view from 2 are great, the other 2 not so great. Plus there's all this extraneous stuff -  roads, car parks, fences, signs, walkways, people, rubbish, …

If you turn your head to the south as you drive along,  at various points you can see the treeless plain in the foreground intersecting with the blue ocean in the background. It's not really apparent how distant that point of intersection might be but an educated guess would suggest 'closer than you might think'.

At the next suitable place I pulled over and parked, slung my camera bag over my shoulder and started walking south.

Within 10 minutes I was standing on the edge of infinity.  Behind me stretched the whole continent of Australia, in front of me – nothing.

I had it all to myself.
