Listening to ... Castlemaine State Festival
Dahlia, Kyneton |
My bro and sis-in-law invited me to stay a few days with them in Kyneton, partly a social visit, partly to check out their new house, so I headed on up last week.
Serendipitously, the 2019 Castlemaine State Festival was also in full swing last week.
About 30 years ago I owned a 60 acre bush block in the hills on the edge of Castlemaine. I used to camp up there for the week of the Festival and attend as many events as possible. I hadn't spent much time in "The Great Centre" since then so I took advantage of the close proximity of Castlemaine to Kyneton to plan a full day.
As well as wandering around reacquainting myself with the place, I booked tickets to a handful of musical events:
- Jacqueline Ogeil and John O'Donnell playing music for two harpsichords by Francois Couperin, J.S. Bach, J. L. Krebs, Bernardo Pasquini and G.B. Lucchinetti
- The Thompson's Foundry Brass Band
- Mona Asuka playing a mixture of works for the piano -- Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert/Liszt and Liszt.
All were excellent, with Mona Asuka bordering on the brilliant, though I am a self-confessed Lisztophile.
