27. Cooktown

Resumed the trek north, Cooktown being the last item on the bucket list for this trip.
Went up National Hwy 1 from Walkamin to Mareeba and then the Mulligan Hwy via Mt Molloy and Mt Carbine for the rest of the way.
Back to the savannah and quite mountainous for most of the way.
Somewhere along the way
Getting closer
Lots of fires around.  Most of them seemed to be being treated as fuel reduction burns.  My excitement for the day was driving along a stretch of road with running grass fires on either side.  I had my doubts because of poor visibility but there were cars in front and behind that just wanted to plunge in, so lemming-like I went along.  Anyway, it was OK.  When we emerged from the smoke there were hundreds of black kites sitting on the road and flying around looking for prey.
Cooktown has a nice tropical feel to it.  The easterley trade wind blows all day and all night, but at least it's not a cold wind.
