16. Mount Isa and Mary Kathleen
Been hangin’ round this smoky town too long
I thought I’d like it here but now I know that I was wrong
I’m all fenced in by people, I feel the need of scope
At night I wake up dreaming that I’m hangin’ to a rope...
Divided opinions about the place.
On the downside, a town largely devoid of character, dominated by the dark, satanic mill.
On the plus side, the surrounding country is beautiful and interesting. The drive in on the Barkly Hwy is quite spectacular.
Also on the plus side, it has one of the best tourist information centres that I've seen. Friendly staff, everything is free, hot showers for the weary traveller, drinking water on tap to fill up your tanks.
Supplies replenished, I returned to the tranquility of Mary Kathleen for one more night.
Today has been the hottest day of the trip, so far. High 30s. Still warm even well after sundown. 12% humidity though -- very comfortable.
