Day 53, Pemberton

Today was a day of backtracking.
On my way down Caves Road yesterday I had intended to have a look at the famous Margaret River surf break.  There seems to be a strange disconnect, however, between the town of Margaret River, which is 10kms inland, and the coast which doesn't seem to want to identify itself with Margaret River at all.  Consequently I wizzed past the turnoff, which just says 'Prevelley Point', without even noticing.  20kms down the road I started to wonder if I'd missed it.  The 'No Backtracking' policy was in force yesterday so I continued on to Augusta.
Today I'm thinking that I would still like to see it.  It's only a 28km backtrack so I decided I'd do it.  Guess what? I missed the turnoff again, but I was paying more attention so I only overshot by a km or so.
It turns out that the Margaret River Surf Classic competition is being held there this weekend.  I had a look for while -- the surf wasn't great but every now and then a big set comes through. You can see how, under the right conditions it could be huge.
Also I went back to have a look at Cape Leeuwin under more favourable conditions.

Satisfied that I hadn't missed anything, I headed on my way into Tall Timber country.
I'm staying tonight in Pemberton, an old timber town.  Sitting out looking at the full moon shafting through the trees.
By the way, Rokky turned 50,000 today. They grow up so quickly, don't they?
